Corrections Policy

CivicInsight.uk is committed to accuracy, fairness and transparency in all our journalism. We recognise that errors can occur, and we treat every mistake seriously. This policy sets out how we correct errors, how readers can report inaccuracies, and what standards we follow to ensure the integrity of our published content.

Our commitment to correction

When we discover an error — whether through our own editorial review, fact-checking processes, or a report from a reader — we will correct it promptly and transparently. We aim to acknowledge every valid correction request within two working days and to resolve the issue as quickly as the nature of the error allows. All corrections are made with an explicit note on the affected article so that readers can see what was changed, when and why.

How to report an inaccuracy

If you believe that any article, analysis, commentary or data published on CivicInsight.uk contains an error, please contact us at corrections@civicinsight.uk. To help us process your report efficiently, please include:

the exact URL or headline of the article in question;
the specific passage or data point you believe is incorrect;
the correct information, along with any supporting evidence or sources;
your name and a contact email address (optional but helpful for follow-up).

We treat all reports in confidence. If you prefer not to use email, you may also contact our editorial team via our contact page.

How we handle reports

All correction reports are reviewed by our Standards & Fact-Checking team, led by Michael Trent, Standards & Fact-Checking Lead. The desk assesses the claim, checks original sources, consults the relevant editor or reporter where necessary, and determines the appropriate action. We aim to acknowledge your report within two working days and to communicate a decision or next steps within five working days for most cases. More complex investigations may take longer; we will keep you informed of progress.

Types of corrections

We apply one of three types of correction, depending on the nature and severity of the error:

Factual correction with note – Applied when a clear factual error (e.g. a wrong date, name, statistic or quote) is confirmed. The article is updated, and a correction note is appended at the top or bottom stating the original error, the corrected information and the date of correction.
Clarification – Used when language or phrasing could be reasonably misinterpreted, or when additional context is needed to prevent misunderstanding. The article is amended, and a clarification note explains what was added or rephrased and why.
Update – Used when new information becomes available that does not change the factual accuracy of the original reporting but adds important context or developments. The article is updated, and a note identifies what was added and when.

In all cases, the correction note is visible on the page and includes the date of the change. We do not silently alter content without acknowledgement.

Serious errors and escalation

Any error that could significantly mislead readers, damage reputations, or breach our editorial standards is escalated to our Editor-in-Chief, Rebecca Langford, who oversees the final decision on corrections and, where appropriate, public statements. Serious errors may also prompt a review of our internal processes to prevent recurrence. Transparency and record‑keeping

We maintain a record of all significant corrections made to articles on our site. Readers can view correction notes directly on each article; we do not retroactively revise articles without notice.
